one of a Jewish sect, of the time of Christ, that rejected the oral law and denied the resurrection of the dead and the existence of angels. The sect stood for hereditary priestly authority. »

Next to the Pharisees in power, but not quite so numerous, were the Sadducees (Hendrik van Loon).

[Old English sadducēas, plural < Latin Saddūcaeus of the Saddūcaeī, the Sadducees < Late Greek < Saddoukaîoi the Sadducees < Hebrew < Zadok, apparently the Hebrew high priest in the time of David (II Samuel 8:17, Ezekiel 40:46)]
